Participation in "Work and loneliness: Quality resting time for an improved mental health of workers"

6/15/2023

This article has previously been published on www.donboscoyouth.net.
On the 26th April 2023, DBYN was invited to participate in a European Parliament’s Breakfast Event titled: ‘Work and loneliness: Quality resting time for an improved mental health of workers.’ The Event organised by the European Sunday Alliance was co-moderated by the Members of its Steering Committee: the European Confederation of Independent Trade Unions (CESI), The Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union (COMECE) and The Federation of Catholic Family Associations in Europe (FAFCE)

The meeting hosted by MEP Miriam Lexmann was about how socially and economically speaking, we need framework conditions to avoid loneliness, and this is in everybody’s interest: affected workers, their families, the social communities, the employers, and their businesses. Loneliness, because we are human and social beings, keeps us from seeking social interaction. Most humans, even many of the most industrious ones, also want to have time to spend with family members, friends or peers, or collective social communities, which can include volunteering, worship, leisure, and sport. If we are lonely and feel we cannot connect to those people and communities that we want.
So, what follows from this?
According to the European Sunday Alliance, it means that we need to re-think how we rest from work. In our globalising and liberalising world of work, boundaries and definitions of working time and resting time are increasingly blurred, scattered and dispersed for more and more workers. The result is that different workers and family members may have time off work at different times of the day and different times of the week. It means that we need to make more efforts to synchronise free time – what labour economists call resting time.

DBYN supporting more inclusion

3/3/2020

Heverlee (Belgium), 02 March 2020: Don Bosco Youth-Net ivzw, the European network of Salesian youth organisations, participated in the writing of the joint Position Paper: Inclusive Youth and Education Programmes. The document, subscribed by a large number of European and national civil society organisations, is an urgent appeal to political decision makers to take measures regarding more inclusive EU youth and education programmes.

Don Bosco Youth-Net ivzw, connecting 18 organisations in 16 countries dedicated to youth and to young people with fewer opportunities, sees inclusive youth work as an essential part of their daily work. As implementers of inclusive youth work projects, DBYN strongly believes that truly inclusive education programmes at European level should be accessible for every young person.

This position paper presents 9 recommendations and concrete practical suggestions for an inclusive implementation of the European youth and education programmes Erasmus+ and the European Solidarity Corps. These recommendations are based on the gathered experience of implementing the programmes in the areas of youth work, adult education, vocational training as well as school education and voluntary services. DBYN hopes that these recommendations will improve the new generation of programmes in order to facilitate the participation of ALL young Europeans.

The voluntary guardian for unaccompanied minors. A salesian guide

9/28/2017

In June 2017 more than 9,000 unaccompanied foreign minors landed in Italy , vulnerable young people who, after a long voyage to the sea, are alone and exposed to various risks. An answer to this emergency is the figure of the volunteer tutor , introduced by law 47/2017 on "Provisions on measures to protect unaccompanied minors . "

The volunteer tutor is a private citizen who decides to carry out the legal representation of the child only, so that his rights are acknowledged: he supervises the reception conditions, promotes his psycho-physical well-being and monitors his educational and training paths integration.

As Salesiani per il Sociale, the emergency of foreign minors interrogates us first and calls us to give concrete answers. Given the multiplication of children arriving in our country, it is necessary to find new and motivated resources. This guide was born to guide all those citizens who want to respond to this appeal , providing all the information and requirements to become a volunteer tutor .

The Guidebook is only available in Italian. Click on the Picture to download the guidebook.

Abstract for article on young refugees accepted

5/22/2017

The youth partnership between the European Union and the Council of Europe is going to publish a knowledge book on youth work with young refugees. When we received the call for abstracts, we thought this to be an unique opportunity to contribute to the topic from a Salesian perspective. Our German member organisation took the initiative of submitting the abstract: "Living under the same roof - a home for young apprentices and unaccompanied minor refugees right in the middle of Munich" by Benjamin Henn and Niklas Gregull. We are happy to announce that the abstract has been accepted, and we are invited to send the full article.

Why is Don Bosco important today?

These statements were recorded at Don Bosco Mission's 2017 international youth exchange: "Be the change and heal the world".

During this week 40 participants from eight countries created different digital and creative products to counter extremism, discrimination, social exclusion and hate speech. These recordings indicate why they want to do this through their engagement in the global Don Bosco Movement.

A Salesian response to the 2030 Agenda

9/27/2016

On the first anniversary of the acceptance by the United Nations of the Sustainable Development Agenda till 2030, Don Bosco Network is launching A Salesian Response to the 2030 Agenda, emphasizing the commitment of Don Bosco organizations to the advancement of “poor and abandoned youth”. The Sustainable Development Goals were signed exactly a year ago and represent a challenge for the next 15 years. Unlike the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which were destined for developing countries, particularly the poorest, these apply to all countries, rich and poor. There are 17 Objectives that, with the accompanying 169 goals, constitute an agenda of progress and social transformation that will be achieved only if all stakeholders (governments, civil society, religious and private organizations) come together and work together. Don Bosco Youth-Net ivzw is one of the 18 co-signatories of this policy statement from the worldwide Don Bosco Movement.
